President-elect Donald Trump has announced the selection of former Georgia Sen. David Perdue as the next US ambassador to China. This appointment is seen as crucial as Trump aims to reform the trade relationship between the United States and China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, 'Tonight, I am announcing that former U.S. Senator, David Perdue, has accepted my appointment as the next United States Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.' Trump emphasized Perdue's role in maintaining peace in the region and fostering a productive working relationship with China's leaders.
David Perdue, who previously served as the CEO of Reebok and Dollar General, entered the Senate in 2015. He was known as a close ally to Trump during his time in the chamber. Perdue faced defeat in his reelection bid to Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in 2021. Subsequently, he ran in Georgia's Republican gubernatorial primary in 2022 but was unsuccessful, losing to incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp.
