Former salesman opens jacket potato shop with a difference in Nottingham

Lunchtimes in Nottingham have just got more interesting thanks to a new shop that has opened selling jacket potatoes with a twist. As well as the usual spuds we're accustomed to, Baked offers the Turkish version called kumpir that are stuffed and buried under a mound of toppings.

The shop has opened in former gin bar, Gincident, in Friar Lane. It went on the market at the start of 2023. As well as jacket potatoes, there's homemade falafels and salads for a healthy lunchbreak.

Inside are four tables with 12 seats for customers who want to eat in - and delivery is available too. The menu starts off with classics such as tuno mayo, chilli, cheese and beans and chicken curry.

The specials section has Ottoman with Turkish sausage, olives, couscous, sour pickles, and pickled cabbage. The Mexicano is loaded with chilli con carne, guacamole, jalapenos, pickled red peppers and sweetcorn.

Owner Emirhan Polat said: "The reason why we wanted to do jacket potatoes was because we're originally from Turkey and there's a traditional Turkish street food that is made from jacket potatoes that's very different to the English versions. It's more mashed with butter and cheese and it has loads of different toppings, called kumpir.

"Jacket potatoes are filling and quick so when people have a set time for their break, they don't have to wait 15 to 20 minutes."

Emirhan's mum Cigdem makes the falafels that come served in a pitta bread or with salad, with two different sizes on offer. Salads such as chicken Caesar salad, king prawn, avocado and chickpeas and hummus are on the list.

Emirhan added: "Before I was in sales and always on the road. I was doing sales for supermarkets. selling them products. Because I was on the road constantly, it wasn't for me any more. I wanted somewhere stable where I could work.

"We opened here because of the location, very close to the city centre, there's a lot of traffic going on and the bus stops as well, so that was the main reason we acquired this property. So far we've had good feedback."
