Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, a former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and known for his work with Pearl Jam, pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor manslaughter charge in the death of a pedestrian. The incident occurred in Alhambra, California, where Klinghoffer, 44, was driving an SUV and struck 47-year-old Israel Sanchez as he was walking in a crosswalk on March 18. Tragically, Sanchez succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital.
The charge brought against Klinghoffer on August 29 is for vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, a misdemeanor offense that carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Klinghoffer's attorney entered the plea on his behalf during a court appearance in Alhambra, with no further comments provided after the hearing.
In response to the incident, Sanchez's daughter filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against Klinghoffer in July. The lawsuit alleges that Klinghoffer was driving without license plates and using a phone at the time of the collision. The legal team representing Ashley Sanchez had expressed frustration over the delay in charges being brought following Israel Sanchez's tragic passing.
Klinghoffer's musical career includes his tenure as the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 to 2019, during which he replaced John Frusciante. His contributions to the band led to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making him one of the youngest members to receive such an honor. Beyond his time with the Chili Peppers, Klinghoffer has also performed as a touring and session guitarist for Pearl Jam and Jane's Addiction, in addition to recording with numerous other artists.
