Former Real Madrid president makes Liverpool claim as behind-the-scenes Jamie Carragher video emerges

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Wednesday, February 22.

Former Real Madrid president gives blunt reason for Liverpool hammering

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has explained why he thinks Liverpool succumbed to a defeat in the Champions League.

The Reds lost 5-2 to the La Liga giants in their last-16 first leg at Anfield on Tuesday night. Despite goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool fell to a disappointing defeat, leaving a mountain to climb in the second leg next month.

Calderon was president of Madrid from 2006-09, and was in charge of the club for the £80m signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. He has now spoken about how the Los Blancos were able to defeat Liverpool.

Tuesday’s game was the first time that Liverpool have conceded five goals at home in the Champions League era.

“No doubt,” Calderon told Talksport, when asked about Madrid’s mental strength being a factor in their victory.

“That is something special for our club. We showed that last season with those three matches in the Champions League by doing something no other team would be able to do.”

Jamie Carragher's angry reaction to Liverpool collapse captured in behind-the-scenes video

Jamie Carragher endured a rollercoaster of emotions during Liverpool's 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos came from two goals down before cruising to victory as they inflicted a heavy defeat on the Reds at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp's side stormed in front when Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah were on target in the first 15 minutes.

But Carlo Ancelotti's side, who claimed comeback scalps against Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City on course to their 14th crown last season, once again proved even when they're down they're never truly out. The six-time winners will have 90 minutes to the deficit when they travel to the Spanish capital in three weeks' time.

The former Liverpool defender continued his time as a pundit on CBS Sports' coverage of the Champions League, televised in America, alongside Thierry Henry and Micah Richards.

Carragher's range of emotions was similar to those of Liverpool fans all over the world as it went from elation to disbelief and frustration.

Nunez opened to scoring with a cheeky backheel past Thibaut Courtois which not only caught the Belgian shot-stopper by surprise but the ex-Red too. As he was tucking into his dinner, the Uruguayan netted his 12th of the season much to the delight of Carragher who pumped his fists in the air.

One soon became two in surprising circumstances. Dani Carvajal's passback was controlled by the Real Madrid number one but his loose second touch handed Salah a gift to become Liverpool's all-time leading European goalscorer.
