Former Rangers starlet nets eight minutes into Glasgow debut amid thumping cup win

Cambuslang teenager Sophia Martin took just eight minutes to score on her Glasgow City debut on Sunday and admitted it was a dream come true.

The talented 15-year-old striker climbed off the bench in the 79th minute of the match and in 87 minutes headed in the eighth goal of a 9-0 Sky Sports Cup quarter-final win over Glasgow Women at New Tinto Park.

Sophia has scored on all of her debuts, which saw her start at Hamilton Accies six years ago, before moving to Rangers and now Glasgow City, and represented Scotland under-15s aged just 12.

She moved to Glasgow City from Rangers just over a year ago after feeling unsettled at the Ibrox club.

While she has been called up to the first team four times, that was her first appearance and she bagged a debut goal.

Sophia said: “I can’t be any more grateful to City for having the pathway into the women’s game and supporting me through the transition from my previous club.

“That has been a year and it has been the best year ever.

“I can’t wait to spend many more there.

“Thanks to everyone who makes my dream possible.

“To every girl who wants to play football and is told girls can’t play football, show them how it’s done.”

Delighted mum Natalie Hall revealed it is not the first time Sophia has made such a fast start.

She said: “Sophia has scored on every debut for every club she has been at, she got her full international call-up for the under-15s when she was 12, in a double-header against Wales and scored in that as well.”

Natalie added: “That was her fourth time in the last couple of weeks in the City squad and she has been chapping on the door.

“On Sunday, City gave her the last 10 minutes and she got the goal, so we’re ectatic with that.

“That’s a full year she’s been there, since she left Rangers, and she has been thriving from there.

“Sophia won the treble at Hamilton Accies, and just when Covid struck she went to Rangers but it didn’t work out there and she went to Glasgow City.

“It’s great that they’ve got the pathway into the first team for the academy players, so we’re totally over the moon.

“It’s great for her progress, it’s going to give her a lot of confidence, and she’s just back from a Scotland U16s camp there, so it has topped off a great week.”
