Former Rangers defender Bruno Alves lands new job after retiring from football

Former Rangers defender Bruno Alves is back in football - just days after retiring from the professional game.

The ex-Ibrox stopper is returning to AEK Athens as the new club sporting director.

Alves played for the likes of Zenit, Fenerbahce, Parma, Cagliari and of course Rangers throughout his club career while he was also a mainstay in the Portugal national team.

The 40-year-old brought the curtain down on his playing career in Greece with Apollon Smyrna.

But as of July 1, he will be back in the game in his new off field role.

A club statement read: "AEK announces that it has reached an agreement with Bruno Alves, to take over the position of athletic director of our team from July 1st.

"In his great career he also played in Zenit St. Petersburg, Fenerbahce, Cagliari, Rangers and Parma, while he hung up his football shoes in Greece, as a footballer of Apollon Smyrna.

"He was for a number of years a key member of the Portuguese National Team, with which he counted 96 appearances (11 goals).

"He has participated in three World Cups and three European Cups, celebrating winning the Euro in 2016.

"At the collective level he has won four championships, two cups and two Portuguese Super Cups, two championships and a Russian Super Cup, a championship and a Turkish Super Cup.

"Bruno, welcome back to the AEK family!"
