Announcing the passing of a loved one in local news media is a long-standing tradition, with every notice published to our newspaper and news site also appearing on funeral-notices.co.uk - the UK’s number one site for death notices. Manjeet Singh Matharu
A final bow down for Nottinghamshire's first turban wearing police officer. The first turban wearing police officer to serve Nottinghamshire sadly passed away on Thursday 27 April 2023 following a short illness. Manjeet Singh Matharu served the Nottinghamshire police force for over four decades, which spanned the entirety of his career as a serving officer. As a Sikh, Manjeet's turban was symbolic of his faith but also distinguished him from other officers when he first started serving the police force. During this time, there were no other turban wearing Sikh police officers serving the police force in the area and Manjeet was the first to hold this accolade. Originally born in Kenya in 1954, he settled here in the UK with his family in 1972 and following a short stay in Leicester, he then resided in Nottingham. Manjeet joined Nottinghamshire police force in 1978. Having recently retired at the end of March, following a long serving career, Manjeet holds the honour of also being third in the country for completing a staggering 45 years service to the police force. Throughout his dedicated service to the police, Manjeet worked his way up the ranks to become a detective constable and working in MCU. He had become synonymous in the Nottinghamshire area for wearing a turban. Manjeet embraced wearing his turban on duty and stood out amongst other officers during a career spanning over 40 years. Manjeet showed true commitment to the police force and dedicated his career to serving the local community of Nottinghamshire. He was also featured in an article in the Nottingham Post on Saturday 12th August 1978 for being the first police officer to wear a turban in Nottingham. Manjeet's funeral will be held at Ramgarhia Sabha, 31 Percy Street, Nottingham on Tuesday 9th May 2023 at 10:00am, followed by cremation at Bramcote Crematorium Serenity Chapel at 11:00am. Donations in lieu of flowers for The British Heart Foundation may be left online at www.lymn.co.uk/obituaries or sent care of Deer Park House 359 Wollaton Road Wollaton NG8 1FQ 0115 928 4366 www.lymn.co.uk
