The Houston Texans are taking a look at a player in general manager Nick Caserio’s past to help complete the rebuild.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, the Texans are hosting former New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler for a visit.
Butler, who intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line to seal the Patriots’ 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, was not on an active roster in 2021. The former 2014 undrafted free agent from West Alabama signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, but retired at the end of preseason.
From 2018-20, Butler played 41 games for the Titans, starting in 36 of them, and recording nine interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, breaking up 35 passes, forcing a fumble, recording 1.0 sack, and notching 201 combined tackles, including six tackles for loss.
Where Caserio knows Butler’s work the best is when he was with New England from 2014-17. In that span, the Patriots won two Super Bowls and appeared in another at the end of the 2017 season. Butler earned his only career Pro Bowl selection in 2015. Throughout his 59 games with the Patriots, he started in 48, collected 205 tackles, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 2.0 sacks, eight interceptions, 47 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
The Texans have a need for a veteran cornerback as Houston plans to release Terrance Mitchell.
