Former NFL standout Richard Sherman was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, as reported by the Washington State Patrol. The arrest followed a traffic stop where Trooper Jordan Hazzard-Thomas noted signs of intoxication, such as the odor of intoxicants and Sherman's bloodshot and watery eyes.
Sherman, a highly decorated three-time All-Pro cornerback, enjoyed an illustrious 11-year career in the NFL. He notably played a key role in leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in the 2013 season. Recognized as one of the top defensive players of his era, Sherman was honored with a spot on the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade Team of the 2010s.
During his NFL tenure, Sherman spent seven seasons with the Seahawks before moving on to the San Francisco 49ers for three seasons. He also had a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to his professional career, Sherman excelled at Stanford University.
Following his retirement from playing, Sherman transitioned into a role as a football analyst. However, this recent incident is not the first legal trouble he has faced. In 2022, Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to a previous incident involving drunken driving and a domestic disturbance. He also admitted to a criminal infraction for speeding in a roadway construction zone.
Sherman is expected to have a court hearing on Monday, as confirmed by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Requests for comments on Sherman's arrest were made to his representatives and legal counsel.
