Former Newcastle United winger joins Motherwell on loan from Huddersfield Town

Motherwell have announced the return of Rolando Aarons on loan from Championship side Huddersfield Town.

The Jamaican international joined the Steelmen at the end of the January 2020 transfer window but the pandemic put paid to his stint at Fir Park, with the season called early amid just eight appearances and one goal in claret and amber.

However, the 26-year-old winger - who spent his youth days at Bristol City and Newcastle United - will get a second shot after boss Steven Hammell snapped him up on a season-long deal.

Hammell told the club website: “Rolando is a target I had earmarked even before I got the job as I saw first-hand his qualities and potential when he was last here.

“When I spoke with him, you could tell he was very keen to join us. He’s a player with so much to offer.

"He has pace, he’s direct with a lot of energy and will give us more options on either the left or right flank.

“He’s had a frustrating time with injuries in the last year or so and just needs to get back playing regularly again.

"We think Motherwell is the perfect platform for him to do that.”

Huddersfield Town Loans Manager David Fox believes it will be a good move for the player, having seen his opportunities limited this season.

He commented: “It’s a positive move for Rolando to a club he’s already familiar with.

"Unfortunately, injuries and the positive form of other players in his position have been an issue for him since joining Town, but this gives him the opportunity to go and play regular minutes and recapture both his form and fitness.

“Motherwell have shown a real desire to take Rolando on for the season and he’ll be given every opportunity to show what he’s all about in the Scottish Premiership, which will be good for him after such a long period of inactivity."

Aarons' previous clubs include Hellas Verona in Serie A, Slovan Liberec in the Czech First League and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

He spent seven years at Newcastle, going out on various loans, before joining Newcastle United, but did play 27 games for the Magpies and netted four times.

He could make his debut in tomorrow's Premier Sports last 16 clash at home to Inverness.
