Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll in line for Champions League debut at Club Brugge

Andy Carroll is reportedly on the verge of joining Belgian champions Club Brugge on a free transfer. Former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce took a punt on the 6ft 4in Geordie last year on a short-term contract.

Despite bagging three Championship goals and showing glimpses of his former self, the Baggies decided against offering Carroll another deal. The ex-Magpies striker is eyeing a new club ahead of the 2022-23 campaign and could be in line for a shock switch to Belgium.

A report by the Daily Mail claims the 33-year-old has flown to Brugge following his honeymoon to discuss a move. If he signs, it will be Carroll’s first opportunity to play in the Champions League.

The target man made five Europa League appearances for Liverpool and West Ham, with England also giving him a chance to impress at Euro 2012. However, Carroll has never featured in UEFA’s elite club competition and could get the chance next season - an astonishing feat considering where his career was one year ago.

Newcastle released their academy product after an underwhelming return to his boyhood club. Carroll’s second stint on Tyneside was restricted to substitute appearances on a pay-as-you-play basis.
