Virginia state Sen. John McGuire, a former Navy SEAL endorsed by former President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in a recount of the Republican primary results in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. McGuire narrowly defeated conservative U.S. Rep. Bob Good, chair of the House Freedom Caucus, in a closely contested race.
The initial primary results showed McGuire winning by 374 votes out of nearly 63,000 cast. However, with the margin of victory less than 1 percent, Good was entitled to request a recount. Following the recount, McGuire's lead narrowed slightly to 370 votes, solidifying his win.
The recount process, overseen by a three-judge panel, lasted nearly 14 hours, with the final votes arriving at the courthouse late in the evening. McGuire, confident in his victory, arrived at the courthouse before the recount results were announced, expressing his belief in the outcome.
Good, who has served in Congress since 2021 and is known for his conservative stance, graciously thanked his supporters and constituents in a statement on social media. Despite his disappointment in the final result, Good acknowledged the honor of representing Virginia’s 5th District.
Former President Trump's involvement in the race added a significant dynamic, with Good initially endorsing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential contest. Trump's subsequent support for McGuire further intensified the competition between the two candidates.
McGuire's victory sets the stage for a face-off with Democrat Gloria Witt in the upcoming November general election. The 5th District, which leans conservative, will be a closely watched battleground as the campaigns gear up for the next phase of the election cycle.
