Former Meteor mobile phone customers can claim back cash refund

Former Meteor mobile customers are set to receive an unexpected cash refund after they were overcharged by the phone network.

The data regulator ComReg has this week ruled that the mobile phone provider, which is owned by comms giant Eir, overcharged up to 55,000 customers for 'out of bundle' or extra data charges between 2016 and 2017, CorkBeo reports. It comes after a recent investigation by communications regulator ComReg found that Meteor had not complied with regulations in that time period.

The regulator said in a statement: "Meteor has now taken certain remedial steps with regard to the breaches and has entered into a settlement agreement with ComReg.

"As part of this settlement agreement, Meteor has agreed to refund certain out-of-bundle data charges that were incurred by approximately 55,000 customers during that period to the value of not less than €722,760."

On its website, Eir has added that they expect to make an average refund of around €13 per customer, and this will depend if you're still with Eir or if you've switched phone provider. It is understood that current customers who are still with Eir will be given a credit to their account.

Meanwhile, former Meteor customers who have switched to a different carrier, will be "provided with a unique barcode which they can use to claim their refund through Payzone in retail outlets." So if you were a Meteor customer in 2016 to 2017, be on the look out for emails or text alerts on your phone.

Eir says they plan to complete refunds by the end of July and customers will have 90 days to claim the refund.
