Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster opens up on promise he made to Wrexham

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has admitted that he promised Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson that he had the hunger to fight for promotion to the football league.

Foster's arrival in March led to plenty of media interest after the 40-year-old's last club was Premier League side Watford. The ex-United man had retired at the end of the 2021/22 season but returned to the field on a short-term basis after Wrexham 'keeper Rob Lainton suffered a season-ending injury.

The ex-England international made his biggest impact to date on Monday as he saved Cedwyn Scott's last-gasp penalty to secure the Red Dragons' 3-2 victory over Notts County. Speaking to the club's official YouTube channel after the game, Foster revealed that he had made a promise to his employers about the commitment he would show at the Racecourse Ground.

He explained: "They [the Wrexham fans] have been fantastic with me. They have welcomed me back so well.

"I did not want to come and it be a bit like a circus. I didn't want to come and be like: 'Oh he played in the Premier League last year and he does his YouTube and it is all about getting content.'

"It is not about that, I promise you, it is about playing good football, I am that competitive as a person that, first of all, I want to win and I want to do it properly. I would never let anybody down so when the manager Phil said: 'Do you want it, do you really want it?' I knew what he meant when he said that and I did, I wanted to do it.

"When I gave that promise to Phil I have to go and show the younger lads, because I am obviously going to be older than everybody else, I have to show them that I do it properly and hopefully they will fall in line and do it as well."
