Former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz suspended for Egypt's AFCON final after red card

Egypt head coach, and former Manchester United assistant, Carlos Queiroz will miss the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal after his red card during the semi-final.

Queiroz was forced to watch extra-time and the resulting penalty shootout from the stands after a furious encounter with referee Bakary Gassama in the 89th minute.

It wasn't the first exchange between the pair as Queiroz was shown a yellow card earlier in the game and the former Reds assistant manager had to be dragged away following the sending off.

Queiroz has now been handed a two-match ban so will be missing from the dugout at Egypt look to end a 25-year wait to win the Africa Cup of Nations.

Queiroz after the game made no secret of his disdain at the decision.

"Again, unfortunately, they send this type of referee to a game of this level, referees with no experience, no level, wanting to put on a show… It started right in the dressing room," he said.

"CAF [Confederation of African Football] does not respect Egypt, from the timing of the matches to the quality of the stadiums, we had the worst stadiums, we are Egypt!

"How can this referee stay in the Africa Cup of Nations after what he did? Who understands this? No? Nobody."

Queiroz, 68, had two spells as Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man. His first spell lasted just 12 months before taking charge of Real Madrid. He returned soon after in 2004 and stayed for four further years.
