Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe set for new club after legal dispute

Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe is reportedly set to join Turkish side Adanaspor.

The 26-year-old has been without a club since leaving Derby County in 2021, after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Daily Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath reported on Sunday that Ibe was set to undergo a medical at Adanaspor who play in Turkey’s second tier, the TFF First League.

Ibe has seemingly confirmed the move on social media, posting photos on his Instagram of him in Istanbul, along with a picture of him boarding a plane with the caption: “The journey begins now”.

In an initial post on Sunday, Ibe wrote: “Today I close the door on the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath, step on through and start a new chapter in my life”.

The move follows the recent news that the winger, who made 58 appearances during his time at Liverpool, is in the process of suing his former club Bournemouth due to a dispute over image rights payments.

The case relates to payments Ibe believes he was owed during the final 12 months of his time with Bournemouth, with the Cherries reportedly unwilling to pay the funds until the club is certain the payments do not breach HMRC regulations.

Ibe signed for Bournemouth from Liverpool in 2016 in a club-record £15m deal, where he started brightly until seeing his game time steadily decrease, before leaving the club in 2020.

During his time with the Cherries, Ibe was charged with failing to stop after an accident and careless driving in December 2019.

Two months after being convicted in March 2020, the former Liverpool winger revealed that he had entered rehabilitation in an attempt to deal with his off-field issues, after being stopped by the police while banned from driving.

He said: “I am currently in rehabilitation and hoping with the right help my mental health can improve and I can concentrate on becoming a better person after making poor judgements.”

While playing for Derby County in January 2021, Ibe posted on social media about his mental health issues, describing himself as being “in a dark place”.

He has since spoken openly about his battle with depression, while recovering from a broken leg that he sustained just two weeks after being released by Derby.

"It was a cry for help, to be honest. I felt like I needed to speak out because if not, I don't know what else could have happened. It's a good thing that I did,” Ibe said in November.

“I feel like it was very important that I spoke openly - and to my family - about it because you don't know what can come from mental health. I've been going through depression for the last four years."

Now Ibe, who made his Liverpool debut aged 17, looks finally set to return to football with Adanaspor, having not made a competitive appearance since his three-minute cameo for Derby in December 2020.
