Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez 'very close' to signing for new club

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez appears to be closing in on a move to his next club.

Suarez left Atletico Madrid this summer after his contract expired. It saw his two-year stint in the Spanish capital come to an end, after he was sold by Barcelona in 2020.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan is "very close" to signing for Argentina giants River Plate. It has been claimed that sources close to the potential deal have said the move could be announced on either Monday or Tuesday.

However, despite the report saying River Plate is Suarez’s likely destination, it has also been hinted that the deal is still not fully done.

River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo admitted his club have made a move to sign the 35-year-old. However, he did not say either way whether it would be completed.

“There are possibilities,” Gallardo is quoted telling the Mail Online “I think one of the two will clearly happen. But before that we have to be focused on what we have today.

“If they are signed, it will be to enrich the squad and have another expectation. [Suarez] is an elite player, who is currently recovering from a knee injury. We made the attempt, he has the will, enthusiasm, it's good.

“If he hadn't shown enthusiasm, we wouldn't be here waiting. It will be a decision and when it is possible we will see if it is feasible. You don't have to lie to people or generate a lot of enthusiasm.”

Suarez joined Liverpool from Ajax in January 2011 and spent three and a half years at Anfield where he quickly became a cult hero. He scored 82 goals in 133 appearances and won the Premier League’s Golden Boot award in 2014, shortly before he left for Barcelona.
