Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez at centre of 'beautiful madness' as fans call for return

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is being touted to make a sensational return to his boyhood club Nacional following his release from Atletico Madrid last month.

Suarez, who became a fan favourite at Anfield after a scintillating three-and-a-half year spell, has been linked with a return to the Premier League in recent weeks as well as a move to Wayne Rooney's MLS outfit D.C United.

But now it appears that the Uruguayan could be set for a dramatic homecoming with fans of Nacional taking to social media to try and persuade the former Barcelona man to snub interest from elsewhere and sign with the Montevideo-based side.

On Tuesday evening as rumours emerged about the possibility of Suarez signing from the club he joined in 2001 as a 14-year-old, supporters took to Twitter to get "#SuarezANacional" trending on social media during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The campaign seems to have gained serious traction from those in Suarez's homeland as the mantra had been tweeted over 50 million times as of Monday evening.

Nacional took to their Twitter account to label the online frenzy as a "beautiful madness" and thank supporters for their online efforts, tweeting: "A beautiful madness! More than 50 million accounts in a total of 35 countries and with an average of 1500 tweets per hour at the rate of #SuarezANacional There is no fan in the world capable of so much! #LosHinchasGigantes of #ElClubGigante."

After leaving his boyhood club, Suarez moved to Dutch side Groningen before progressing to Eredevsie heavyweights Ajax. Despite controversy in 2010 as he bit a fellow professional and stopped Ghana's goal-bound header on the line with his hands in the World Cup quarter-final, he was snapped up by Kenny Dalglish in January 2011 for just shy of £23m and flourished during his time at Anfield.

During his final campaign on Merseyside, the 35-year-old fired a record-equaling 31 Premier League goals, despite missing the first five games through suspension, as the Reds fell short in their league title pursuit by just two points.

After trading Anfield for the Nou Camp in the summer of 2014, the Uruguayan claimed numerous La Liga titles as well as a maiden Champions League as he formed a prolific partnership with Neymar Jnr and Lionel Messi.
