Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez agrees sensational return to first club

Former Liverpool attacker Luis Suarez has announced a sensational deal to return to his first professional club.

The Uruguay superstar had been competing in La Liga since 2014, with a long spell at Barcelona followed by two seasons with Atletico Madrid.

And now he is set for a second chapter back at Nacional in his homeland, a side he first joined when aged just 14.

Speaking in a video message posted on Twitter an hour ago, 35-year-old Suarez confirmed: "I’ve now reached a pre-agreement in order to join Nacional, it was impossible for me to say no to this opportunity. I hope final details will be resolved soon in order to complete the deal officially”.

Suarez, who became a fan favourite at Anfield after a scintillating three-and-a-half year stint, had been linked with a return to the Premier League in recent weeks as well as a move to Wayne Rooney's MLS outfit D.C United.

But tonight's news comes on the back of a concerted social media campaign from supporters of the Montevideo-based team, with huge numbers of fans tweeting the hashtag #SuarezANacional over the last week or so.

The campaign gained serious traction from many in Suarez's home country, with the phrase tweeted millions of times.

Nacional described the online frenzy as a "beautiful madness" and thanked supporters for their efforts, posting earlier this month: "A beautiful madness! More than 50 million accounts in a total of 35 countries and with an average of 1500 tweets per hour at the rate of #SuarezANacional. There is no fan in the world capable of so much! #LosHinchasGigantes of #ElClubGigante."

Suarez's video message this evening signed off with: "I hope to enjoy this new stage and see you in the coming days. I send a big hug to all of you and thank you for all the love you have given us. See you soon."
