Former Liverpool chairman preparing bid to buy Chelsea after Roman Abramovich sanctions

Martin Broughton, the man who helped pave the way for FSG to purchase Liverpool Football Club, is now preparing to make a bid of his own - to buy Chelsea.

The 74-year-old former British Airways chairman was installed as a temporary chairman of The Reds back in 2010 to help oversee the sale of the club after the partnership between then owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks collapsed.

Broughton was a key figure during a gruelling courtroom battle with the American owners which eventually helped broker the deal to allowed FSG to purchase the Merseyside club and in doing so reverse their fortunes on and off the pitch.

But now Broughton - a lifelong Chelsea fan - is preparing to make an offer on the West London club following the end of Roman Abramovich's reign after his UK assets were frozen as a result of the on-going war in Ukraine.

Broughton now chairs Sports Investment Partners and remains the only man to have negotiated the sale of Premier League club under Government control - that exact situation Chelsea now find themselves in.

New York merchant bank the Raine Group handling the sale, with Broughton and his team just one of a number of serious bidders looking to get their hands on ownership of the European Champions.
