Former Leeds United man says club failed to heed warnings from previous relegation scrap

Former Leeds United shot stopper Paul Robinson says they didn't learn their lesson from last year's relegation battle. The Whites survived on the final day of the 2021-22 campaign with a win over Brentford, with Newcastle beating Burnley to send the Clarets down.

However, Vincent Kompany's side will replace Leeds in the top flight next season after romping to the Championship title. The Whites were relegated with 31 points and had the unwanted tag of worst defensive record in the division having conceded 78 goals - five more than basement side Southampton.

Last season's boss Jesse Marsch was shown the boot after a dismal run of form by February this season, replaced by Javi Gracia who was also unable to get a tune out of the Whites' squad. Sam Allardyce came in for the final four game of the season but the damage was already done.

"Obviously hugely disappointed to be relegated," Robinson told MOT Leeds News. "It was a strange day.

“You take yourself out of the situation yesterday and nothing matters because Everton got the win. We didn’t know that at the time. I was in Elland Road and it was one of the strangest atmospheres I’ve experienced.

“Sections of the supporters were frustrated. Many were frustrated at the board – understandably so. It was a combination of the last 18 months.

“If you circle a drain long enough, you are going to fall into it. If you look at what happened last season, they didn’t learn their lesson. They didn’t get relegated because they lost to Tottenham."
