Former Inter star admits he expects Andre Onana to leave amid Manchester United transfer links

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Sebastien Frey is worried his old club will sell Andre Onana this summer amid Manchester United's reported interest.

MEN Sport understands Erik ten Hag is looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper in the transfer window. United have announced they are in talks with David de Gea over a new deal but if he did re-sign he would not be guaranteed to be first choice.

While exactly who the Reds will target to replace De Gea is unknown, Onana has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford club thanks to his relationship with Ten Hag from their days at Ajax. Recently, the Cameroonian caught the eye in Inter's narrow defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League final and Frey believes if he was to stay in Milan he could help them push on.

Speaking to Goal, the Frenchman said: "Football today is different than it was in my generation. (Massimo) Moratti’s Inter could afford to keep a player regardless of the size of an offer that they received. Now, there are other needs to think about.

"But if it just depended on me, I would keep him. It’s difficult to find a great goalkeeper.

"If they want to win trophies, then they should keep him. Unfortunately, I think they’ll let him leave."

Before the clash in Istanbul, City boss Pep Guardiola claimed Onana would be perfect for a manager looking to play out from the back. "When you have a goalkeeper like Onana who can read perfectly where everyone is to pass to, with Calhanoglu and Barella, then the strikers hold it up and move the ball around," he explained.

"It is very, very difficult. It would be a tiny bit easier without this goalkeeper, but still very tough."
