Former GOP Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner has been appointed as the chair of the board for the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the primary super PAC supporting Senate Republicans. This decision was confirmed by sources familiar with the situation.
The selection of Gardner for this role follows the announcement of the departure of Steven Law, the current chief executive and president of SLF. Law, a close ally of GOP Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, revealed his exit from the influential outside group on Friday. This development coincides with Senate Republicans promoting GOP South Dakota Sen. John Thune to the position of Majority Leader for the upcoming Congress, following the party's success in gaining control of the chamber in the November elections.
Gardner is set to collaborate with Republican strategists Johnny DeStefano and Paula Dukes in the search for a new CEO and president to take over from Law. Having been elected to the US Senate in 2014, Gardner previously served as the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 2018 midterm elections.
The news of Gardner's appointment as the chair of the SLF board was initially disclosed by the sources.
