Former England striker Jay Bothroyd has agreed with West Ham United manager David Moyes that Leeds United's Crysencio Summerville should have been sent off during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw in the Premier League.
The Hammers’ boss Moyes felt that Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville should have been shown a red card following a late tackle on right-back Vladimir Coufal shortly before the hour mark at Elland Road, with Summerville only being booked and Coufal being forced off minutes later with light bleeding coming from his knee.
Speaking about the challenge during his press conference on Friday, Moyes has said that Summerville should have been sent off, with Coufal now a doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Brentford.

“Vladimir Coufal, we’re going to have to have a look at because he took a clattering the other night,” said Moyes. “Should’ve been a sending off. We’ll need to check Vladimir out.”
Speaking on the incident on Sky Sports show Ref Watch, Bothroyd believes that Summerville should have been dismissed for the challenge.
Bothroyd, whose career included one cap for England in 2010 and Premier League goals for Blackburn Rovers, Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers, feels that Summerville was fortunate to not be sent off.
“I watched the game last night and I thought that was a poor challenge,” Bothroyd told Ref Watch. “I thought that deserved a red, and he [Summerville] got taken off straight after that.
“He lost his head. He thought he should have got a foul, he didn’t get it, he lost his head and reacted. I’m surprised the referee didn’t look at the injury and say, ‘you know what, that is really dangerous,’ the fact that the tackle has been close to his knee cap. That’s high.”
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher also gave his verdict on the decision.
Gallagher, whose career included officiating 261 games in the Premier League between 1992 and 2007, felt that referee David Coote may have not been paying attention to the tackle itself and was instead focusing on the upper body contact.
“I wonder really if, because this is really retaliation for a foul that happened a couple of moments earlier, I wonder if the referee is looking at the upper body movement because he seems to make most of his effort with his upper body and that gets overlooked,” added Gallagher.
“Not a nice challenge and he has to be substituted because of it.”
