Former councillor who became millionaire overnight launches fresh election campaign

A former Renfrewshire councillor who won millions on the National Lottery nine years ago has launched a campaign to be re-elected.

Labour's Iain McMillan was an elected member for 22 years - most recently representing Johnstone South, Elderslie and Howwood - until he quit in 2017.

In his final term at Renfrewshire House, he made headlines when he bought a winning lottery ticket from Morrisons supermarket in Johnstone and scooped a whopping £2,058,662.

But the eye-watering prize he bagged in 2013 was never enough to pull him away from his passion for local politics.

He continued as a councillor until the next election - which he said was always his plan - and after five years out, he's hoping to win a seat once again in the Johnstone South and Elderslie ward.

And he'll be joined on the campaign trail by long-serving sitting Labour councillor John Hood as he aims to secure another term in the chamber.

Mr McMillan, who has spent the past few years as secretary on Johnstone Community Council, said: "I have missed being a councillor and I am delighted to have the support of local members.

"It is now time to campaign and work hard to deliver a second seat for Labour in this ward."

There are currently four councillors representing Johnstone South and Elderslie - the SNP's Andy Steel and Jacqueline Cameron and Conservative Alistair Mackay alongside Councillor Hood.

The SNP group is expected to confirm its final list of candidates imminently, while the Conservatives are due to announce a new candidate for the ward after Councillor Mackay announced he would be stepping down.

Councillor Hood, who was first elected back in 2003, added: "I am delighted to have again been given the support of local Labour members and I will repay their faith shown in me by working hard to promote Labour values during the election campaign."

Renfrewshire will hit the polls on Thursday, May 5, and the count is due to take place the following day.
