Former Boston Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry continues to find success at the NCAA level since leaving the Celtics to take an assistant position with Purdue in 2019 before accepting the head coaching job at Penn State in 2021.
Now, after going 23-14 this season with the Nittany Lions and making it to the round of 32 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, Shrewsberry has been hired to helm Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse Notre Dame according to new reporting from CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Replacing legendary head coach Mike Brey, the former Celtics assistant will also be the program’s first Black head coach.
Norlander cites Shrewsberry’s strong relationships with Celtics alumni such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Gordon Hayward, and Rajon Rondo as another factor leading to the Notre Dame hire.
