Former Celtic winger Paul Slane makes shock football return as a player-coach after six years out

Former Celtic winger Paul Slane has completed his return to football in Scotland's fifth tier at Open Goal Broomhill.

The 30-year-old has worked on Open Goal's YouTube channel with Simon Ferry, who is their host, and the latest venture sees the pair join forces at Broadwood Stadium. Slane has signed a one-year deal in his first move since leaving Clyde in 2016. He's been working to discover his fitness again and the process has been captured in a documentary set to air on YouTube at the end of June.

Ferry was unveiled as Broomhill's new manager in May in a unique partnership between Open Goal and the Glasgow-based side. Slane was a promising talent at Motherwell at the start of his career and his form earned him a move to Celtic, but it didn't work out. Spells at MK Dons, Partick Thistle, Ayr United and Clyde followed on from his Hoops move.

Now a shot at recapturing some of his magic has emerged alongside his trusted podcast peer. Coaching duties will also be taken onboard by the winger.

The former Celtic player said: “I am delighted to sign my first contract in six years and get back to playing football.

"Returning to football has been something that has niggled away in the back of my mind for a while and I wanted to give it one last go.

"I know I still have something to offer and I have been working hard to get back fit in order to show that. Signing with Open Goal Broomhill is the next step in my comeback journey and I am also excited to take the next step in my coaching career by joining Si’s staff.

"Since I stopped playing, I threw myself into coaching and I have really enjoyed that part of the game and helping others develop.

“I’m looking forward to getting back out on that pitch and feeling that buzz again, from hopefully a big crowd at Broadwood Stadium.”
