Former Celtic star Erik Sviatchenko 'weighs up' MLS transfer as boyhood club exit nears

Former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko looks set to leave his homeland for a big move to the MLS.

The 31-year-old was part of the infamous Invincible Treble team under successful boss Brendan Rodgers before returning to Denmark to play for FC Midtjylland in 2018. It was to be an honour for the fan of the boyhood club who eventually took the captain's armband in the city of Herning.

Yet in a surprise turn of events US journalist Tom Bogert now reports that the Danish international could be on his way to the States with Houston Dynamo in Texas. The MLS seems to be an evermore attractive option shown exponentially by the recent exit of Celtic forward Giorgos Giakoumakis to Atlanta United and the exploits of the success of the likes of Lewis Morgan in recent years.

Sviatchenko, who made 62 appearances for Celtic, could be Stateside-bound whose season has just got underway with Houston winning one of their opening three games. The club are managed by DC United legend Ben Oslen who also had a brief spell in his playing career with Nottingham Forest.

The defender played twice against Ange Postecoglou's side in the Australian's first two games in charge in Glasgow. Midtjylland would win the Champions League qualifying first leg 2-1 despite a stunning Callum McGregor goal before a 1-1 draw at Parkhead sealed an early exit for the Hoops.
