Former Celtic midfielder 'in talks' over European job that would create Bundesliga history

Mark Fotheringham could create history if he becomes the new boss of Bundesliga strugglers Bochum with talks underway, according to a report.

The well-travelled former Celtic Park man was assistant to Felix Magath at Hertha Berlin last season but is believed to be the main target to go out on his own after Thomas Reis and No2 Markus Gellhaus were dismissed from their roles say the Scottish Sun.

The 38-year-old would become the first ever Scottish manager in the German top flight should he land the role. He's no stranger to Germany having played their during his career with Freiburg while he has also established contacts at all levels in the game in the country having coached at various levels. Fotheringham also turned out for the likes of Dundee, Dundee United, Norwich City, Fulham and Anorthosis Famagusta, Livingston and Notts County during his playing days.

Reis' dismissal comes after six straight defeats at the start of the new campaign. A 3-1 defeat to Schalke was the final straw with a huge 7-0 loss to Bayern Munich in that run.

A couple of familiar faces to Celtic fans are in the current Bochum ranks with Cristian Gamboa and Saidy Janko on the books.

Reports say negotiations between Fotheringham and the German outfit are ongoing with the poor run of form not putting off the former Hoops man. He's believed to be convinced he can turn their fortunes around.

They are next in action against Cologne on Sunday. They are the only team with zero points in the division and are already five from safety with an early season catch up required.
