Liam Sercombe came close to a return to Bristol Rovers on deadline day in January, but he will be lining up against them next season. The midfielder has agreed a new one-year contract with Cheltenham Town.
The 32-year-old was coming to the end of his deal at Whaddon Road and took his time to assess his options, but he as agreed to spend another year with Michael Duff's Robins.
Sercombe was a January transfer target for the Gas. Joey Barton was eager to add an attacking midfielder to his squad on the final day of the window, but he turned to Elliot Anderson after deals for Sercombe and Fleetwood Town's Callum Camps failed to materialise. That chain of events worked out perfectly for the Gas with Anderson a star in their promotion triumph.
Sercombe, meanwhile, had a good campaign in the heart of Cheltenham's midfield, registering three goals and eight assists in 46 appearances as the Robins achieved their best finish in the third tier. He has been an important senior player for Duff and will look to build on his two-year stay next term.
"Buzzing to sign another year after two successful seasons so far," Sercombe said. "See you next season Robins."
The midfielder, still based in Bristol, was released after three seasons with the Gas in 2020. In 127 appearances, he scored 19 goals, with his best return coming in his debut season in BS7, netting 12 times in all competitions.
Sercombe has also had successful spells in the EFL with Exeter City and Oxford United, and he is set to reach the 600 appearance milestone next season.
The Gas also will be reunited with former striker Ellis Harrison next season after he agreed to terms with Fleetwood Town. Former Rovers captain Luke Leahy and defender George Williams remain at Shrewsbury Town and Cambridge United respectively.
