Former Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill emerges as shock contender to take charge at Wigan

Former Bristol City double-winning manager Steve Cotterill is in the running to take the vacant position at Wigan, according to the bookmaker's odds.

The Latics are searching for a new boss after sacking Leam Richardson before the World Cup break following a run of seven matches without a win. Wigan dropped to 23rd in the Championship at the time of his dismissal.

His sacking also came less than two weeks after he signed a new three-year contract. Everton legend Duncan Ferguson remains the favourite following his interim spell in charge of the Toffees in 2019.

Steven Gerrard is also in the mix alongside former Blackpool manager Neil Critchley and Shaun Maloney. According to Wigan Today, the club will interview "around a dozen" candidates this week with chairman Talal Al Hammad flying to the UK to be part of the process.

That could include Cotterill who moved to 6/1 in the betting with just two names ahead of him with shorter odds. The 58-year-old has been in charge of League One Shrewsbury since 2020 with his side currently sitting 14th in the table.

Cotterill enjoyed just over two successful years in the dugout at City when he took over with the Robins languishing 23rd in League One. He guided his side to 12th in his first season before securing promotion back to the Championship by finishing as champions with a record 99 points.

He also lifted the Football League Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Walsall at Wembley. Cotterill couldn't maintain the momentum on the return to the second tier and he was sacked in January 2016 following a run of one win in 12 matches.

He then went to Birmingham but was dismissed after five months with seven wins in 27 matches before taking time out. After almost three months away from management, Cotterill was appointed manager of Shrewsbury in November 2020.

Ex-City manager Dean Holden is an outside 33/1 shot to be appointed as he looks for his next role after leaving Stoke earlier in the season. Meanwhile, fellow Championship rivals Luton are close to appointing Rob Edwards as their new manager to replace Nathan Jones.

Edwards has been without work after being sacked at Watford at the end of September in favour of Slaven Bilic.
