Former world champion boxer Liam Smith has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm related to an alleged attack on a night concierge.
Smith, who held the WBO version of the light-middleweight title from 2015-16, was arrested after a man suffered serious facial injuries.
The incident reportedly took place on 13 September at a luxury Manchester apartment building at The Blade on Silvercroft Street in Deansgate, according to the police.
Smith then made an appearance at the Manchester Magistrates Court the next day and was subsequently charged with causing GBH with intent and later released on bail.
The alleged victim is reported to have suffered fractures and later required surgery.
Known as ‘Beefy’ in the ring, and one of four brothers who all fought at world title level, the 38-year-old has been out of the ring since last year, when he fought and lost to Aaron McKenna on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn 1.
The Liverpudlian will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on 19 October, where he will be asked to enter a plea.
Smith was due back in the ring this summer, but pulled out of a bout with Ilari Kujala in Finland on 4 September just days before, citing a calf injury.
After stunning Eubank Jr in their first fight in 2023, Smith suffered defeat in the rematch in the same year, but his career has seen him fight at an elite level, including a 2016 fight with the legendary Canelo Alvarez in Dallas, Texas, which he lost by a ninth-round knockout.
