Former Essendon defender Conor McKenna could be set for an AFL comeback next season.

Irish media reports the 26-year-old speedster has told his Gaelic football teammates he is planning to return to Australia to add to the 79 games he played for the Bombers.

At least three AFL clubs - Geelong, Brisbane and Port Adelaide - have already been linked to McKenna.

McKenna left Essendon after a turbulent 2020 season, during which he was handed a one-game ban for breaching AFL biosecurity protocols.

He suffered from homesickness that year - the first of the COVID-19 pandemic - and returned to Ireland after the AFL season.

But he always left the door open for an AFL comeback, telling reporters in Ireland two months later: "I don't think it (my AFL career) is totally done."

He also hinted at a possible return in September last year, tweeting: "Any AFL clubs need a half back?"

McKenna starred for County Tyrone as they claimed the 2021 All-Ireland final.
