Former Adelaide Crow Jasmine Simmons signs with Port Adelaide Power's AFLW side

Former Broken Hill footballer Jasmine Simmons has been traded to Port Adelaide ahead of the 2024 AFLW season.

The 24-year-old swapped allegiances from the Crows to its cross-town rivals the Power after two years.

One of the key factors behind Simmons request to be traded was the impact she could have on Port Adelaide as the club enters its second AFLW season.

"I've always been a part of underdog teams," Simmons said.

"Because it is such a new team, you have the ability to impact on the culture and impact the foundation of what you want the team to be and where you want the team to go."

The Broken Hill product, who captained Australia at the Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup, said she was not expecting to be given a place in the side.

"Every spot is earned no matter what team you're in," Simmons said.

"At preseason I will put in all the hard yards and hopefully get rewarded with some games."

Port Adelaide's AFLW list manager Naomi Maidment said Simmons fit the mould of what they were looking for during off-season.

"We have been mindful of needing to add height to our side, and Jasmine fits this criteria perfectly," she said.

"She is also very athletic, can play nearly anywhere, and is a fantastic cultural fit for our club."

Reunited with Philips

For Simmons, the sporting season never stops, with the 24-year-old playing basketball for West Adelaide in the NBL1, as well as lacing up the boots for Woodville West-Torrens in the SANFLW.

The former North Broken Hill Bulldog was looking forward to lining up again with former Crows star Erin Phillips, who also made the move to Port Adelaide.

"It's an incredible experience," Simmons said.

"She's just such a lovely, genuine person and she's so willing to teach and so willing to give a helping hand whenever you need."

The schedule for season eight of AFLW is yet to be released.
