Forensics investigate 'human bones' found in wooded area near Morpeth school

Forensic officers descended on a wooded area near a school as investigations into the discovery of potential human bones continue.

A cordon remains in place in a small wooded area in Morpeth, Northumberland - three days following the harrowing find. Police officers were joined by forensics on Cottingwood Lane on Saturday scouring the area as part of the ongoing investigation.

Northumbria Police said it received reports of the 'human bones' shortly before 3pm on Thursday (March 9), before scrambling to the scene to probe further.

The shocking discovery was made just yards away from King Edward VI School, which has remained unaffected by the ongoing investigation. On Friday, officers were standing guard at the taped off area.

Saturday saw forensics wearing white suits arrive at the wooded area as the investigation reached its third day.

Police have said enquiries are ongoing and have not released any further information at this time.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 3pm yesterday (Thursday) we received a report of potential human bones being found in a wooded area near Cottingwood Lane, Morpeth. Officers remain at the scene to carry out enquiries and an investigation has been launched into the discovery.

The scene remains closed as officers continue to investigate the bones, as well as the surrounding area.
