Just south of Miami, off a quiet stretch of highway near Homestead, Florida, sits a stone structure that still puzzles visitors today. It was built almost entirely by one heartbroken immigrant, mostly working alone, over the course of nearly three decades. In the Live Science investigation, science writer Benjamin Radford found that more than 1,000 tons of limestone were quarried and hand-carved into walls, furniture and a working sundial. No one ever discovered how he built it, and his silence turned a roadside oddity into an enduring American legend.
