Consumers are being warned to avoid buying tickets to popular events being sold illegally at inflated prices by unscrupulous ticket reselling platforms.

Fair Trading Commissioner Natasha Mann is warning football fans wanting tickets to finals games and parents making school holiday plans it's illegal in NSW to resell a ticket for more than 10 per cent above the original price.

Corporations found breaching ticket reselling laws can be fined up to $110,000, while individuals can cop a fine up to $22,000.

Anyone buying tickets at inflated prices also risks being turned away from the event.

"If a ticket is sold for more than the allowed cap, the event organiser may cancel the ticket and refuse entry to the person who holds it," Ms Mann said in a statement on Monday.

NSW Fair Trading had found a single ticket to the National Rugby League grand final in Sydney next month being offered for sale on a ticket reselling website at 49 per cent above the original price.

One person paid $977 for two tickets to a Robbie Williams concert on a ticket reselling website, when the face value of the tickets was $198, while another consumer paid $700 for tickets to a Harry Styles concert that originally cost $300.

Consumers had contacted Fair Trading with complaints about fake tickets and tickets being purchased but not delivered, Ms Mann said.

"Consumers should avoid dealing with ticket resellers in order to avoid disappointment."
