Football legend Roddy Collins recalls the 'most stupidest' thing he's done in his life

Former football legend Roddy Collins has opened up about his regrets after he disappeared when he was called up to the U18s squad – saying it was the “stupidest thing” he ever did.

Collins was called up to represent Ireland in the U18s Ireland squad against Belgium but on the day when the team was up, he was named a sub so Collins walked off and went home.

Opening up about that moment, the former Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers boss said it was on the “most stupidest things” he ever did.

He said: “It was one of the most stupidest things I ever did. I regret that.

“And I regret not hugging my dad more. Other than that, I’m grand. I can live with everything. I’ve probably had the most unperfect life.

“I’ve done stupid things that hurt people and let them down, but I can’t change that. I’m happy. I’ve a great wife, brilliant kids. I got lucky there,” he told Sunday Independent’s People and Culture magazine.

Collins also opened up about his marriage to his wife Caroline, saying they’ve barely spent days apart – except when he went drinking with Vinnie Jones in London one day.

He said: “It wasn’t perfect. I’ve done mad things. Like I went off missing to England with Vinnie Jones, having a few pints, for a day or two.

“Caroline had to ring me – ‘where are you?’ ‘I’m in London’. ‘What? Get on the next flight home’.

“But I’m with her every single day, and I love every minute of it.

“She’s the best. She’s strong. Very strong. Takes no nonsense off me, thank god,” he gushed.
