Football fans unite to support food banks by ramping up donations amid cost-of-living crisis

Football fans are helping hard pressed families during the cost-of-living crisis - by ramping up donations to food banks and other charities.

Celtic, Rangers, Partick Thistle, Dundee, Dundee United, Kilmarnock and Motherwell supporters have all been praised for digging deep over the last few weeks.

A number of new groups have sprung up online since the start of the new season as supporters do what they can to help those in need.

Enough is Enough, a group campaigning to fight the cost-of-living crisis, showed Celtic and Rangers fans clubbing together outside Celtic Park on Old Firm day.

The group tweeted: “Celtic and Rangers fans together at yesterday’s Old Firm collecting for Glasgow foodbanks.

“All of our old people warm, all of our kids fed, every community. Nothing less. We won’t be divided.

“That is our demand. #EnoughlsEnough”

And Celts Supporting Foodbanks, which joined Twitter in June, praised Rangers supporters for helping them help those in need.

The group posted: “Hunger has no race. It has no religion. It has no sexual orientation or gender. And now - even in Glasgow - hunger doesn’t wear club colours. Proud of what we achieved today. Big thanks to @GersFoodBanks for coming along (hope you enjoyed the game as much as us).”

Rangers fan group GersFoodBanks replied: “Highlights of the day included watching the team bus arrive, and the generosity of fans with their donations. That’s where it ended. Thanks for having us.”

The group’s next collection at Ibrox is scheduled for the home game against Dundee United today (SATURDAY), near the subway station from 1pm.

Fans Supporting Foodbanks Scotland encouraged fans to spend the money they would usually spend at a game on donations after fixtures were cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of The Queen.

The group, which joined Twitter in July, wrote on the social media site: “With the announcement that this weekend’s fixtures have been postponed, we would encourage anyone who would have been attending a game to use the ticket, or half time pie & bovril money, to make a donation to a local foodbank. #HungerDoesntWearClubColours”.

Fans Supporting Foodbanks Dundee is a group run by fans of rivals Dundee and Dundee United.

The group handed donations into the Boomerang Community Centre in Stobie after the match with Queen’s Park at Dens Park, and to Menzieshill Community Hub in Dundee after the city’s recent derby match at Tannadice Park.

Jags For Good is an independent, fan-led initiative set up by Partick Thistle supporters to help families in Maryhill and elsewhere in Glasgow.

The group has launched its own Energy Fund, which will be managed by Glasgow North West Food Bank and raised £6,000 in just a few days.

A JustGiving page was set. up for the fund which sees big-hearted fans being able to donate money, which is then used to buy energy top-ups for people on prepaid meters who are being pushed into poverty.

Comedian Ray Bradshaw also announced a gig to support the fund, which was due to take place at Glasgow’s The Stand Comedy Club on Sunday night, with tickets priced at £12.
