Football fan threatened to stab nurse at Perth Royal Infirmary

A football fan banned from attending matches anywhere in the UK threatened to stab a nurse working at Perth Royal Infirmary after she refused to give him a CT scan.

Cameron Lorimer was banned from going to football grounds across the country for two years last year for leading a celebration of St Johnstone’s Scottish League Cup win at a time when large gatherings were banned because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Perth Sheriff Court previously heard the 20-year-old was repeatedly observed to be “the main instigator” of rowdy scenes witnessed at McDiarmid Park last February when the team returned from Hampden Park on a bus after beating Livingstone.

Depute fiscal Nicole Lewis told the court around 100 supporters gathered illegally at the Crieff Road venue that night and that Lorimer was seen encouraging a 30 to 40 strong group to break down barriers separating them and the players.

Sheriff Francis Gill sentenced Lorimer to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and ordered him to pay a fine of £750 for breaching the peace plus another £400 fine for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Now it has emerged seven months prior to that incident, Lorimer threatened to stab a nurse working at PRI after attending the hospital with a head injury said to have occurred at his parents’ house.

Fiscal depute Matthew Kerr told Perth Sheriff Court: “He [Lorimer] was within an assessment room on ward four, being seen to by staff nurses when he became irate and made demands for a treatment including a CT scan.”

Mr Kerr said Lorimer got even angrier when the nurses told him he didn’t need a scan.

“At this point he has started shouting and swearing at the nurses,” Mr Kerr told the court. “He made threats to stab them if they attempted to come close to him.”

The court heard Lorimer was then discharged from hospital but brought back a second time by his mother due to further concerns about his health.

Lorimer was then admitted overnight but became aggressive again the next day over visiting arrangements.

Mr Kerr said Lorimer repeatedly told staff nurses to “f*** off” on this occasion, one of whom was 22 weeks pregnant at the time.

“She was extremely fearful of the accused,” he said.

Lorimer, of Staffa Court, Perth, pled guilty to shouting, swearing and threatening a named nurse with violence on July 20, 2020 then repeatedly shouting and swearing another time the next day.

Sheriff Robert Carr deferred sentencing Lorimer for six months to give him an opportunity to demonstrate he can stay out of further trouble.

“Your behaviour was wholly unacceptable,” the sheriff remarked.
