Football fan dies just minutes before St Johnstone-Aberdeen Premiership clash

A football fan has died following a "medical incident" just minutes before kick off at a Scottish Premiership match. The 72-year-old man fell ill at St Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park in Perth before their match with Aberdeen on Saturday, August 20.

Medical staff from both clubs and emergency services rushed to assist the pensioner and provided treatment for up to an hour. However, despite their best efforts, the man died a short time later.

Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Kick off was set to be at 3pm but was delayed by around 15 minutes due to the tragedy. Aberdeen ultimately won the match 1-0, thanks thanks to a winning goal from midfielder Leighton Clarkson.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.50pm on Saturday, August 20, police were advised of a medical incident involving a man within McDiarmid Park, Perth. Emergency services attended and a 72-year-old man died a short time later.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

St Johnstone FC have been contacted for comment.
