Football bosses 'appalled' at fighting fans as Largs Thistle launch probe into shame game

Largs Thistle will investigate the violent scenes that took place at Barrfields Park on Saturday after their Scottish Junior Cup exit at the hands of Petershill.

Fighting broke out between fans minutes after the full-time whistle with punches and kicks traded and a bottle thrown before the rammy spilled onto the park.

The ugly scenes marred a thrilling quarter-final clash which Petershill won 3-2.

Police have launched a probe into the incident and the club have now announced they will carry out their own investigation.

A statement released by the West of Scotland League Premier Division club said: "All of us at Largs Thistle were appalled by the behaviour of a small number of fans from both sides following our defeat in the Scottish Junior Cup to Petershill on Saturday, March 12.

"Serious disorder of this kind will not be tolerated by our club, and we will use the powers within our unacceptable conduct policy to prevent those involved from attending future matches and or/events.

"We pride ourselves in being a family club where anyone young or old can attend to enjoy football at its purest.

"This was most certainly a disappointing day for the club on and off the pitch. We are extremely grateful to Police Scotland for their rapid response to deal with this incident. We will do everything we can to assist them in any further enquires.

"We have also been in contact with the Scottish Junior FA and will cooperate fully with any investigations and or disciplinary hearings carried out by them or the Scottish FA in the future.

"The club intents to carry out a full investigation into this incident and will decide what future safety/security measures are required to keep our people and supporters safe. This investigation will include the review of extensive CCTV footage of the incident."

Sergeant Mark Semple, from Largs police station, said: "Our enquiries are continuing into a disturbance at Barrfields Stadium, which was reported around 4.30pm on Saturday, March 12.

"Officers attended at the time and the crowd subsequently dispersed with no arrests made.

"We are aware that there are a number of photographs and videos being circulated and would appeal for anyone who believes they can assist our investigation to please come forward.

"You can call police on 101, quoting incident 2389 of March 12. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous."
