Footage shows abandoned Glasgow shopping precinct as it prepares for demolition

An urban explorer has uploaded footage of Glasgow’s abandoned buildings at the Shawbridge Arcade site, as they’re set to be torn down.

YouTube account Scotts Land uploaded the video to their account, showing various sections of the arcade and the artworks that have appeared over time. As the video mentions, the original monuments and older buildings will be left as they were before the complex is demolished.

The YouTuber says as he walks around the derelict site: “It really boils ma heed how these places are left alone and left to disintegrate.

“It’s not far from the Burrell Collection, and this place is disused - I’m stunned by it. The shops are all shut, and it's due to get dropped soon.

“There’s some very cool street art, and I'm a big advocate for that. The place is sad, and it’s sorry.”

As he walks around the grounds, there’s a variety of graffiti works shown - some clearly the work of vandals while others are carefully created depictions. We also see the businesses that have long since left including a variety of takeaways, a chemist, charity shop and other outlets.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the buildings in Pollokshaws would be sold to Glasgow Housing Association for £1million - before being demolished and replaced with 70 homes for rent. The once thriving complex had become a wasteland of sorts, with just one retailer operating before the sale.

William Hill were the last tenants, with many of the other units being left to the elements over time. The buildings had become a colourful artistic area for street artists, with an array of graffiti works and detailed art displays.

Wheatley Group, who are behind the development, said demolition work will begin before the year ends.

Frank McCafferty, group director of repairs and assets at Wheatley Group said: “This is the latest phase in the regeneration of Pollokshaws. It will see around 70 much-needed, energy-efficient, affordable homes built in the heart of the community.

“Work is due to start demolishing the building before the end of the year. We’ll continue to keep the community closely involved as our plans take shape.”
