Food recall alerts extended over Lidl fish products and popular baby food due to health fears

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has extended two recent food recall alerts to include more products over fears they could cause serious health problems if eaten.

On December 16, Lidl recalled two of its smoked trout products due to fears they could contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which can cause serious infections. This recall was extended on December 22 to also include some of the supermarket's smoked salmon products for the same reason.

The FSA also issued a recall alert on December 16 over allergy fears for popular baby food brand Ella's Kitchen, which is sold in a number of supermarkets, because one product contained ingredients not mentioned on the label. On December 22, this recall was extended to cover additional best before dates.

Shoppers have been urged not to eat these products and instead return them to receive a full refund. Here's everything you need to know about these products and which batches are affected by the recall, according to the FSA.

Ella’s Kitchen Banana Multigrain Baby Rice (Ella's Kitchen/FSA)

Ella's Kitchen baby food

  • Pack size: 125g
  • Batch Code: 27922
  • Best Before dates: 05 October 2023 and 06 October 2023

Ella’s Kitchen is recalling Banana Multigrain Baby Rice because it contains oats, (gluten) which are not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to oats or gluten. The inclusion of oats also makes this product thicker in texture than it should be for a 4 month+ product.

Ella’s Kitchen is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.

The advice from the FSA is: "If you have bought the above product and have coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to oat or gluten, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was purchased for a full refund."

Lidl has issued a recall for several salmon and trout products due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms caused by this bacteria can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis. Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

The FSA advises: "If you have bought the above products do not eat them, instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. Any queries or concerns can be directed to Lidl Customer Services on 0800 977 7766 or customer.services@lidl.co.uk."
