One Glastonbury fan is convinced they have uncovered who the secret 'Churnups' act taking to the Pyramid Stage this evening is. After sharing 'evidence' of a snapshot they took of Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl backstage on Twitter, @Richwoodywood says the "Churnups are definitely Foo Fighters."
For weeks, there has been much speculation about who a band known only as 'The Churnups' are. The mysterious act is due to perform Friday evening, prior to headliners The Arctic Monkey's and Royal Blood are due on stage. While rumours are still swirling online about who it could be, @Richwoodywood seems to have revealed who they are.
In their post, Dave Grohl can be seen standing next to a festival worker backstage while holding a coffee mug. Alongside the image, the music fan wrote: "Look who is currently back stage setting up." It comes as the Foo Fighters' official Twitter account this afternoon shared a link to watch "The Churnups' play at 6.15pm" via BBC's Glastonbury live broadcast.
Addressing the rumours, Emily Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury Festival founder Michael, recently told BBC Radio 2: "To be honest, I think there's a lot of rumours that are circulating about The Churnups, one of which is true. I don't think I can completely confirm but it's coming soon.
"But this is a huge, huge, huge, huge surprise and we have kept this secret for so long, just me and (her husband) Nick, we didn't even tell the kids we were like 'Nobody can know this' and I think it's going to be extraordinary later."
The Churnups are due on stage at 18:15 on Friday, June 23 and are expected to do a set of just over an hour. The most likely group to be revealed as The Churnups are Foo Fighters.
A message frontman Dave Grohl posted earlier in June even hinted at the band's Glastonbury appearance, as he thanked his fans "for being there for us" amid their return to touring following the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March last year.
In the last sentence of the statement, Grohl teased that Foo Fighters, who have a new album out, are indeed The Churnups. He wrote: "Every night when I see you singing it makes me sing harder.
"When I see you screaming it makes me scream louder. When I see your tears, it brings me to tears. And when I see your joy it brings me joy. But I see you...and it feels good to see you, churning up these emotions together."
Other internet rumours have suggested The Churnups could be Pulp. The band recently announced they will be touring, but drummer Nick Banks seemed to pour cold water on the rumour, tweeting: "Though it's very tempting to tease you lot again. I know nothing of the 'Churnups' band. Ok? Over and out. (For now)."
Elsewhere at the festival, Hozier was confirmed to be the surprise act at 19:35 on the Woodsies stage, previously named the John Peel stage. The Irish singer-songwriter, full name Andrew Hozier-Byrne, said he is "thrilled" to be performing at the festival again in a "not-so-secret set" on Friday evening.
