Folly Farm zoo is the new home of two Welsh wildcats which have been extinct in Wales for decades. Just slightly larger than a domestic cat and closely resembling a tabby, the felines once roamed freely and were a common sight throughout Wales - and are even thought to have been the inspiration behind Welsh myths and legends.
Wildcats became extinct in their native home Wales at the end of the 20th century. If you want to see them outside of captivity today, you will have to travel to the Scottish Highlands – and even sightings there are rare as the cats are notoriously shy.
The two male cats named Caradog and Myrddin - inspired by Celtic folklore - have been relocated from Scotland, as part of the managed European Breeding Programme for the species. Their new home will be an impressive new exhibit built almost entirely by the Folly Farm's employees.
