Folk Singer Melanie, Known for

Melanie, the folk singer-songwriter, has passed away at the age of 76.

Renowned singer-songwriter, Melanie, known for her iconic performances at Woodstock and her string of hits in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 76. Her publicist, Billy James, announced her death and stated that Melanie had been residing in central Tennessee at the time. The cause of her death was not immediately disclosed.

Melanie, whose real name is Melanie Safka, began her journey into the music industry in the vibrant folk scene of New York. With her distinctive voice, capable of transitions from high-pitched and coy to a deep, soulful rasp, Melanie quickly became a beloved figure. She not only penned her own songs but also enchanted audiences with her heartfelt performances.

One of Melanie's most memorable hits was 'Brand New Key,' featured on her 1971 album 'Gather Me.' The song tells the story of a girl longing for a boy, who bikes and skates past his house. With its catchy chorus and playful lyrics, the song resonated with listeners around the world, catapulting it to the top of the charts in the United States and several other countries. Although Melanie did not necessarily intend for sexual innuendo in the song, its interpretation varied among listeners.

Reflecting on her writing style, Melanie once mentioned in an interview with the Tennessean newspaper in 2014 that she believed she was often misunderstood. She attributed this to her cherubic appearance and the perception of relevance associated with angst-filled and angular female musicians. Nevertheless, Melanie's music struck a chord with audiences far and wide.

'Brand New Key' experienced multiple revivals over the years. It had a prominent role in Paul Thomas Anderson's acclaimed film 'Boogie Nights' in 1997. Moreover, late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon paid tribute to Melanie by lip-syncing the hit on 'The Tonight Show' in 2016.

Born to a jazz singer in Queens, New York, Melanie Safka pursued her passion for music and studied at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She began performing at coffee houses in the vibrant folk hubs of Greenwich Village and other New York venues. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1969, and she gained popularity in Europe with songs like 'Bobo's Party' and 'Beautiful People.'

Melanie's career reached new heights when she was invited to perform at the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969. Among a limited number of solo female performers, including Joan Baez and Janis Joplin, Melanie captivated the audiences with her heartfelt performance. The candles held up by the crowd during her set inspired her first major U.S. hit, 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),' which reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, her song 'Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma' became a popular choice for artists ranging from Ray Charles to Miley Cyrus, and found its way into numerous commercial jingles for years to come.

In recent years, Melanie's music continued to resonate with fans. Her danceable track 'People in the Front Row' from the 1971 album 'Garden in the City' even found its place in the acclaimed series 'Black Mirror.'

Melanie was married to her manager and producer, Peter Schekeryk, from 1968 until his passing in 2010. Together, they had three children who paid tribute to their late mother, expressing their grief and stating that the world felt much dimmer without her.

Melanie's talent, unique voice, and heartfelt lyrics have left an indelible mark on the music industry. Her songs will continue to be cherished and will serve as a reminder of the impact she made. As the world mourns her loss, her music will forever remain a testament to her artistry and her ability to connect with audiences on a deep and personal level.
