Quick Summary
Focal just launched a new pair of luxurious, high-end speakers.
But you'd better be sitting down when you read the price...
If you're in the market for high-end hi-fi speakers, a respected brand like Focal is always worth considering. With decades of experience, you know you're buying into something trustworthy and quality.
Now, the brand has unveiled a new set of luxurious floorstanding speakers. Called the Scala Utopia Evo M, these units are delectably designed with more than a hint of seventies charm.
The new model takes the foundations provided by the original Scala Utopia, including a three-way architecture. However, these new units adopt the M-profile midrange from the Utopia Main range of pro-grade speakers, offering a midrange response which is much more transparent and natural sounding.
It's not the only tech which is borrowed in the new design. It also takes the PRISM tweeter from the recent Diva Alta Utopia model, which uses a multi-material design.
The result offers a higher level of rigidity than beryllium, and maintains a healthy balance between being lightweight and offering suitable damping. That means you can expect incredible purity in the high-end of your sound.
All of that is added to a platform with improvements to the phase crossover system, which allows users to precisely adjust the bass and treble response to suit the listening environment. Additional Gamma and Focus Time technologies ensure consistency and stability in the operation, too.
Now, if you're thinking that all of that tech can't come cheap... you're exactly right. Priced at €40,000 / US$46,000 (approx. £34,400 / AU$66,000) per pair, these aren't even in the same postcode as cheap.
This end of the luxury speaker market is hotly contested, with many major brands offering premium, stylish floor standing speakers at similarly eye-watering prices. You could probably make a case for any one of them, but if you're in a position to buy, these new Focal units should definitely have a spot on your "must try" list.
