Florida's Shift Towards Republican Party In Presidential Elections

Florida Republicans oust state party chairman facing rape allegations in critical election year

Florida, once a key presidential battleground state, has shifted towards consistently supporting Republican candidates in recent elections. The state's significance in national elections is evident, as the last Republican to secure the White House without winning Florida was Calvin Coolidge in 1924. Prior to Joe Biden's victory in 2020, no Democrat had managed to win the presidency without carrying Florida since Bill Clinton in 1992.

In the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump notably improved his standing with various demographic groups in Florida. For instance, in 2016, Latinos comprised 18% of the presidential electorate, with Trump winning 35% of their votes. By 2020, the Latino demographic had grown to 19% of the Florida electorate, and Trump's support among them increased to 46%. Additionally, Trump made marginal gains with Cuban voters and female voters in the state.

Florida is currently preparing for the GOP presidential primaries scheduled for Tuesday. Notably, due to the Democratic party submitting only one candidate for the ballot, there will be no Democratic primary in the state. Consequently, all of Florida's delegates will be allocated to President Joe Biden.
