What was once considered seafood waste has become a powerful tool in restoring Florida's coastal ecosystems. Between 2007 and 2024, the state returned more than 500,000 tonnes of recycled oyster and clam shells to the Gulf of Mexico, helping rebuild damaged oyster reefs and revive marine biodiversity.
According to a report of Upworthy, the shells were collected from seafood restaurants and processing facilities instead of being sent to landfills. After being cleaned and prepared, they were placed in areas where oyster reefs had declined due to overharvesting, pollution, and environmental disasters.
